Please take a look at Smorgasbord Blog Magazine’s of my super fact #19 “An account impersonating you on Facebook does not mean you have been hacked“.
The goal of this blog is to create a list of super facts. Important facts that are true with very high certainty and yet surprising, misunderstood, or disputed by many. This blog aims to be challenging, educational, and fun, without it being clickbait. I determine veracity using evidence, data from reputable sources and longstanding scientific consensus. Prepare to be challenged (I am). Intentionally seek the truth not confirmation of your belief.

The worst is when they have done it to someone who has passed. They coped my mom’s old FB account after she died. She forgot the password a year or two earlier and we weren’t able to close it. It was unsettling to see she sent a friend request. So another reminder to be persistent and close old accounts. Maggie

Copying/cloning accounts is such an easy thing to do and yet it can such unsettling consequences. Maggie I am so sorry that happened to you.

This happened to my wife we think. We don’t really use the platform anymore but she did have some odd stuff happen with facebook.

I am sorry that happened Kevin. A lot of people are quitting Facebook because of things like this. I am still there because I am administrator for several beer review groups and I have a lot of overseas family and friends.

It was a long time ago. I never used the platform much and my wife did to talk with family in Brazil at the time. I mostly played the silly farm game, I had quite the farming empire.

Ha ha a farming empire. That’s like me with a beer empire. Whenever I drink a beer I write a detailed review and I take 20-30 photos of it and I post the best photos in about a dozen beer review groups. Then I am the administrator or moderator for 6 beer groups.

Java Bean: “Sí, our Dada has seen various of his friends saying they were ‘hacked’ because somebody is impersonating them! And then he had one friend who actually did get hacked and wow was it a nightmare for her to try to get anyone from Facebook to help her, although she finally did after writing to her state’s attorney general and copying FB’s legal team …”

It is a common misperception that being cloned is being hacked. Actually, getting hacked is so much worse though. I am so sorry that your Dada’s friend was hacked for real. What a nightmare, and it is terrible that Facebook is not helping out more when that happens. She did the right thing writing to her state’s attorney general and copying FB’s legal team. But she should not have to got that far. Facebook needs to do better.

Congratulations on having your post shared! And yes, this is an important topic. I’ve only had one person attempt to impersonate me on social media and it was amazing how many people said I was hacked even though everything the person grabbed to impersonate me was publicly available. Fortunately, we were able to shut down the impersonator fairly quickly.

Yes hacking and copying gets confused a lot. It is great that you were able to to shut down the impersonator quickly.
