Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Share Superfact 21 – Neutering or spaying a dog at 6 months old can be dangerous to their health depending on breed

I was very happy when I saw the post above. Sally is sharing my super fact 21: Superfact 21: It is often recommended that you should neuter or spay your dog by the age of 6 months even as early as 8 weeks. This may be OK for some smaller breeds but is dangerous to the health and longevity of many larger breeds. In addition, she is promoting my Leonberger dog book for which Robbie wrote a great review. Thank you so much Sally and Robbie. Please visit her post at the Smorgasbord blog magazine and read it.

My name is Thomas Wikman. I am a software/robotics engineer with a background in physics. I am currently retired. I took early retirement. I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

    1. I did not know it either until we got a Leonberger. The Leonberger community is very much on top of the health of the dogs and making sure that everyone getting a Leonberger dog is a responsible dog owner. Before you get one you need to go through an interview, almost like a job interview, and they keep records. It was our breeder, who is arguably North America’s most reputable Leonberger breeder, who insisted we waited two years and we almost did. That’s how I first learned about the damage the lack of hormones can do. But it all depends on the breed. Then there are irresponsible dog owners who let their dogs run loose causing unwanted pregnancies, which complicates the issue.

    1. Thank you so much Jacqui. Yes now we check this information when we get a new dog. The amazing thing is that not all veterinarians know. Some do but not all, and then there’s the pressure to neuter/spay as soon as possible because there are irresponsible owners who let their dogs run loose and cause unwanted pregnancies. That complicates the advice.
